OCTOBER 2019 Students of the Faculty of Management and Information Technology (FPTM) in USAS had taken part in the National Investment Challenge Extravaganza (N.I.C.E.2019), the programme was held at Universiti Utara Malaysia from October 3 to 5.

USAS was represented by two Bachelor of Business Administration (Entrepreneurship) students, one Bachelor of Business Administration (Marketing) student and two Bachelor of Islamic Finance students.

OCTOBER 2019 Sultan Azlan Shah University is delighted to receive a visit from the Honourable Perak Secretary of State, YB Tuan Haji Zainal bin Abu Seman.

The visit around the campus was conducted by Executive Management, along with Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Wan Mohd Zahid Mohd Noordin, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

There are fatwas that Islam does not condone any party, especially the Muslims to commit atrocities and kill the civilians. This has been recognised and held by many countries, thus placing Datuk Dr Afifi al-Akiti as the world’s leading scholar.

For the fellow of the Faculty of Islamic Studies in the University of Oxford, his manuscript was produced when he was a student at the university in the field of Theology, Philosophy and Islamic Studies.

His work in Arabic entitled ‘Mudafi al-Mazlum bi-Radd al-Muhamil ála Qital Man La Yuqatil’ (Defending the Transgressed by Censuring the Reckless against the Killing of Civilians), discusses about fighting for the oppressed by denouncing the killing of the civilians by the extremists, which was written following the London bombing on July 7, 2005.

Due to the incident, he sent a lengthy article via email to a group of scholars explaining that according to the Shafie, Islam does not teach its people to commit violent act. Indeed, Islam is a religion of peace.

The article, written in Arabic was well received by Muslim scholars and then get translated into many languages including English, French and German, making him known in the eyes of the world.

To date, the fatwa has been widely used as a reference by fellow preachers and academicians, besides being used as arguments by media practitioners including Mehdi Hasan, the Al-Jazeera broadcaster to refute the notion that Islam is a religion that supports terrorism.

Being listed in the top 500 influential Muslims, it is more impressive when Afifi, 43 years old, who hails from Batu Gajah, Perak becomes the first Malay, as well as the only Malaysian who is offered a permanent position at the top university, which has existed more than 900 years as a lecturer at the age of 32 due to his extensive knowledge and experience in Islamic studies.

He said, his tenure at the university is like being an ‘ambassador’ of the Archipelago community especially Malaysia because most of the University of Oxford students who are British, American and European have never set foot in Southeast Asia.

“This is a responsibility from Allah Almighty. I accept with humility. Alhamdulillah the community over there is truly nice and amazing, the can accept who I am. My class is also attended by other students such as those from the science faculty,” he said in a meeting when he was in Malaysia recently.

“In the UK, we aim to teach Islam in a resourceful and wise manner, with the narrative from the leading scholars such as Imam al-Ghazali to the Messenger of Allah, to avoid being misled by transgression,” he added.

The renowned scholar also held an important role as Imam Paduka Tuan (Orang Besar Delapan) Perak as the official advisor to the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah on various matters especially regarding Islam.

Able to communicate in seven languages, including Latin, Greek, French, German, Arabic, English and Malay, Afifi was also appointed as the member of Perak Council of Islamic Religion and Malay Customs by the late Sultan Azlan Shah in 2009.

In 2018, the Council of Rulers had appointed Afifi as the Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Committee of the Council of Rulers for Islamic Affairs at the federal level.

“The committee is crucial to convince stakeholders at the highest level of Islamic jurisdiction, namely, His Royal Highness the Malay Rulers to provide suggestions and rooms for improvement for the Islamic institutions at the federal level,” said Afifi.

Due to his ongoing international service and contribution, it is not surprising for him to be listed in “The World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims” since 2010.

The manuscript written by him was published by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Amman, Jordan.

Afifi, who is also a fan of the films featuring the late Tan Sri P Ramlee as well as Star Wars series said besides the ceaseless effort, the secrets to his success is definitely the sacrifices he had had made and support from his family.

“Without sacrifice, we would not be where we want to be, and without the sacrifice of my family, I would not be where I am today. There is no easy way to succeed, we have to work hard, that is the secret to success,” he said.

Talking about his early education, the father of three said when he was in primary level, he moved from school to school around Selangor, to follow his mother who was a teacher back then.

Because of his perseverance and blessing from his familt, Afifi, who is also a member of the Malaysian Halal Council, eventually managed to graduate with a Bachelor of Scholastic Philosophy and History and Philosophy of Science from Queen Belfast University, United Kingdom (2001), Master of Islamic Studies from the University of Oxford, UK (2002) and Doctoral Degree (PhD) in Islamic Studies, from University of Oxford, UK (2008).

“I had travelled abroad to seek knowledge and experience at the age of 15 because of my own desire. I travelled to many Arab countries to learn, including Morocco to study via talaqi (face to face) with the best scholars.

“I had the opportunity to become an imam in Belfast, Northern Ireland before pursuing my studies at the University of Oxford with a full scholarship as the ‘Clarendon Scholar' from the university until I completed my PhD,” added Afifi, who is the former recipient of the Prime Award cum Maulidur Rasul Figure 2017, at the national level.

As a scholar, he advised Muslims to better understand Islam and find balance in seeking worldly knowledge to achieve success in the hereafter.

“I believe that if Muslims succeed in the world, we can set an example with a universal, noble value for others to live on,” he said.

At the end of the conversation, Afifi pointed that Islam has become an inspiration to others to thrive, it is a beautiful, universal and perfect religion, but if the ummah are the other way around, then they need to work hard in learning about Islam and become better believers. –BERNAMA
